This position is located at the Peninsula Equipment Shop at 150 E Street, Hampton, VA and services the HRHT Tunnel Systems and assists the Williamsburg Residency.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Equipment Repair Technician to diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical equipment related to construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations. The Core Responsibilities of the position include: Perform safety inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police Inspection program for vehicles and equipment. Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using electronic testing equipment, service and equipment repair manuals and on-line resources. Recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed. Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete and close-out work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs. Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment or assets according to PM schedule and guidelines. Make repairs as needed when deficiencies are found or recommend outsourcing. Prepare equipment for emergency operations. Make equipment repairs to reduce downtime during emergency operations to include on-the-road repairs. Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts. Perform repairs and overhauls to all types of automobiles, equipment and tools to include engines, transmissions, driveline components, electrical and computer systems, fuel injection systems, air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic components and air brakes. Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, pre-employment physical and drug screen, references, and work history will be required prior to employment. Valid Driver's License Required. Safety Shoes required.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement. DHRM has also published a companion guidance document for the Alternative Hiring Process for persons with disabilities. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
